The south London-based Genomics Network Alliance, which is led by Guy’s and St Thomas’, has been announced as a successful bidder in the race to become a pioneering Genomic Medicine Centre - part of the groundbreaking 100,000 Genomes Project.

All smiles as new Children’s Dental Centre opens

A new centre for children’s dentistry and orthodontics at St Thomas’ Hospital was officially opened on 1 December. The Children’s Dental Centre, which sees almost 10,000 outpatients a year, has moved from the 22nd floor of Guy’s Tower to its new home in South Wing at St Thomas’.

West Norwood centre brings health and leisure under one roof

West Norwood Health and Leisure Centre was officially opened on 5 December by local MP Tessa Jowell. Services include Guy’s and St Thomas’ community health services, a GP surgery, a dental school run by King’s College London, Lambeth Council’s customer service centre, a gym and a 25-metre swimming pool.

TOHETI - Transforming Outcomes and Health Economics Through Imaging

It has been a busy few months for the TOHETI programme getting things underway for phase two, and the rollout of new pilot pathways across eight patient pathways, including persistent headache, acute chest pain, uterine fibroids, breast, colon, prostate and lung cancers, and scaphoid fractures.

The Guy’s and St Thomas’ Headache and Facial Pain Service cares for patients with complex headache disorders. Our multi-disciplinary team includes consultants, clinical psychologists, a neurosurgeon, clinical nurse specialists, research fellows and research nurses.

Lambeth Integrated Musculoskeletal Service

The Lambeth Integrated Musculoskeletal Service is a new one-stop service, combining MCATTS and Physiotherapy services, commissioned by Lambeth CCG to provide a comprehensive musculoskeletal assessment and treatment service to Lambeth residents.

New endoscopic therapy service for Barrett’s oesophagus and early oesophageal cancer
The Endoscopy Department at St Thomas’ runs a dedicated Barrett’s endotherapy programme, which is led by Dr Jason Dunn (Consultant Gastroenterologist). If dysplasia is identified, referral is made to the multi-disciplinary team that includes gastroenterologists, surgeons, oncologists, histopathologists and a nurse specialist. Then a decision about treatment choices is discussed and decided upon with the patient in a follow-up clinic.

Increased service provision for oesophageal cancer referrals
An NHS England national awareness campaign is due to launch on 26 January for one month, encouraging people over 50-years-old with heartburn persistently for three weeks to seek referral to their GP. The rationale is to identify patients with Barrett’s oesophagus and early oesophageal cancer when at a treatable stage. This is expected to increase referrals for upper GI endoscopy in the UK by 50%.

Palliative care out of hours service
There is a shared  24 hours/seven days a week palliative care rota across Guy's and St Thomas', King's College Hospital (Denmark Hill and PRUH sites) and Lewisham University Hospital.

Lambeth and Southwark Older People's Information Directory is now online

Age UK Lambeth has launched an online directory to help older people, carers and health and social care professionals keep up with changes and discover local services that may be of help to older people. The directory will ultimately support more older people and their carers to access local services to prevent and reduce the impact of crises, which could result in admittance to hospital services or residential care packages.

Aqueous cream should NOT be used as a leave-on emollient for patients with Eczema

Aqueous cream increases desquamatory and inflammatory protease activity, as well as transepidermal water loss. The Eczema Education Team therefore advises aqueous cream is NOT prescribed as an emollient.
