Children’s Assessment and Referral Service (CARS)

Evelina London Children’s Hospital has recently launched a new general paediatric referral support service – the Children’s Assessment and Referral Service (CARS). The service is delivered by a consultant general paediatrician from Monday to Friday between 11am and 7pm. It provides advice and triage to support GPs with the management of paediatric patients.

People with learning disabilities (PWLD) can find being in hospital a stressful experience.  Hospital Passports (similar to ‘This is me’ booklets in dementia care) can help to ameliorate the situation.

Clinically focused screening echocardiography - available to your practice
Point-of-care cardiac ultrasound scans are increasingly part of a comprehensive echocardiography service. We view these as an extension of the clinical examination and they help us to make clinical decisions without waiting for a full standard echocardiogram.

Cardiac computed tomography service

The cardiac computed tomography (CT) service is now one of the five largest units in the United Kingdom following an expansion in cases of over 600% in the last three years. The department is an accredited Society of Cardiovascular CT level III centre and meets all stipulated requirements recommended by the Royal College of Radiologists and the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography.

Cardiac surgery department spearheads the key-hole valve surgery programme

Valve surgery, especially aortic valve surgery, is the second most common heart operation performed in UK. The cardiac surgery department based at St Thomas’ Hospital offers a specialised service for patients with heart valve disease requiring this operation.

Complex endovascular aortic surgery

We use minimally invasive endovascular techniques to treat aortic pathologies including thoracic, abdominal and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms and chronic aortic dissection. This service has an international reputation and attracts referrals from around the country.

The NHS - via the National Institute for Health Research - is building a national BioResource, a panel of volunteers to help discover the cause of health problems (e.g. obesity, heart disease, cancer, skin conditions, asthma, allergy, etc) and use these findings to improve clinical treatments.
