A closer look at Colposcopy and Reproductive Healthcare services

This month we asked Dr Ali Kubba, lead consultant in colposcopy and reproductive healthcare at Guy's and St Thomas', to give GPs some hints and tips.

1) Could you tell us about your clinic and the type of conditions you treat?

The Guy's colposcopy clinic is the largest in London conducting more than 5000 consultations a year, but size does not matter! What matters is the excellent care we deliver supporting the women we see, explaining what their tests mean and dealing with other needs such as dyspareunia, discharge/infections and contraceptive problems that all impact on their well-being. While two thirds of referrals are due to abnormal cytology, one in three women we see attend due to clinical indications such as abnormal bleeding or abnormal appearance of the cervix. This category is rising. We also deal with women who have had repeated inadequate smears and those where access to the cervix is difficult.

Improvements to Urology services on e-RS

The Urology department at Guy’s and St Thomas’ has created a new specialist triage service on the NHS e-Referral service (e-RS) to assist GPs to get their patients into the most appropriate clinic at the hospital.

This pathway is for referrals to a specific consultant or specialist service within urology at Guy’s Hospital. This might include second opinions, referrals into a specialised clinic, and returning patients who have been seen in the one-stop clinic but needed time to make a decision on their treatment.
