Sign up for Pride 2017

Dear LGBT Forum members,

Welcome to the second edition of our 2017 Newsletter. We had a busy start to the year with our LGBT History Month celebrations, which saw us engage with lots of staff and patients over two days in St Thomas’ and Guy’s Hospitals.

Our next big event will be our Pride celebrations. Last year we had more than 100 people marching under the Guy’s and St Thomas’ banner at Pride and this year we’re aiming to have even more. We’re also planning on attending Pride in the Park (Sunday 9 July) at Vauxhall Pleasure Garden’s this year. Pride in the Park is a more family oriented event in association with UK Black Pride. We’re hoping that between the march on Saturday 8 July and the celebrations in the park on Sunday there’ll be something for everyone in our Forum to enjoy.

Tickets to march in Pride are limited and we will be sending out emails and putting up posters around the Trust over the coming weeks with all the details you'll need to get involved. In the meantime, come to our next social event on Thursday 15 June in Guy’s Bar, meet other Forum members and help us make this year’s Pride our biggest and best one yet. If you would like to join in please email lgbtforum@gstt.nhs.uk

Alex and Jayne, LGBT Staff Forum Co-Chairs.

LGBT History Month

On Wednesday 22 and Tuesday 28 February we held two days of LBGT History month celebrations at Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals.

Lots of staff visited our stalls and enjoyed rainbow cake and entertainment provided by Bar Wotever and Stephenie Robinson. We also had stall on the day providing information on work going on around the Trust and south east London to celebrate and promote equality and diversity.

On the day we encouraged staff to write messages of support to their LGBT friends and colleagues by filling out an 'I'm an ally because...' poster. We had two poster boards full of messages of support and inspiration at the end of day, including messages from the senior leadership team. You can see many examples of the wonderful messages written by staff on our Twitter feed.

If you have any ideas and/or would like to get involved in the organisation of these events then please let us know at lgbtforum@gstt.nhs.uk

Everyone is invited to get involved with events and activities at the Trust to mark International Nurses’ Day on Friday 12 May.

We will be celebrating the outstanding work of all our nurses and midwives. The theme of the day is ‘Nursing and midwifery through the ages’.

There will be lots of activities including:

  • from 11am – 2pm, there will be interactive and informative stands in the gardens outside St Thomas’, in Birdsong Corridor at St Thomas’, the main reception area of Guy’s hospital and the Cancer Centre at Guy’s
  • at 11am, 12 noon and 1pm, there will be guided tours of artwork at St Thomas’ starting at Central Hall. Places will be given on a first come, first served basis.
  • from 9am to 8pm, you can come and cheer on our fearless fundraisers who will be abseiling 160 feet down the front of St Thomas’ Hospital all day to raise funds for the Trust.

Get involved on social media by using the #nursesday and tagging @GSTTnhs.

Staff recognised for response to Westminster attack

Staff from St Thomas’ Hospital were recognised for their work in the aftermath of the Westminster Bridge terrorist attack at a prestigious awards ceremony, alongside the London Ambulance Service. They included doctors, nurses and physiotherapists who treated the wounded on the bridge, as well as staff who led the Trust’s response to the incident.

Good Morning Britain’s Health Star Awards reward those people who have gone the extra mile to help someone’s health or save a life.

Set up to recognise the best in British healthcare, the awards took place at the Rosewood Hotel, London, with presenters Susanna Reid, Kate Garraway, Charlotte Hawkins, Ranvir Singh and Dr Hilary Jones all in attendance.

Chief Nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Dame Eileen Sills accepted the award on behalf of the Trust.
LGBT Forum movie night

Help us choose the movie!

We're looking for suggestions for an LGBT themed movie night. Please email us with your top three suggestions to lgbtforum@gstt.nhs.uk and we'll screen the one which gets most votes in our MediCinema.
Be a superhero!

On Friday 12 May our fearless fundraisers will take in the views of London from St Thomas’ as they abseil down the side of the hospital – dressed as their favourite superhero.

Do you fancy taking on this challenge? Register now for an experience you’ll never forget and you will be doing something amazing to raise much-needed funds for a department or ward.

Don’t worry if abseils aren’t for you because we’ve got plenty of other ways you can get involved and support your hospital or community sites. For more information visit the fundraising website.
