Two minutes with…our Maternity Assessment Unit
What is the role of your team?
The Maternity Assessment Unit is an A&E for pregnant women, open 24 hours a day. We provide timely assessment and reassurance to women who are over 18 weeks gestation and up to six weeks after birth.
Tell us about a typical day
A dedicated team of midwives and maternity support workers see a large number of women, including those who are in early labour or who have broken their waters. We aim to assess every patient within 30 minutes of their arrival. Obstetric doctors are on hand to review those who are unwell and those in need of urgent management decisions for them and their babies.
What’s the best thing about your job?
The best thing is being able to care for many different women and their partners throughout pregnancy in times of need, 24 hours a day. Our team of midwives, doctors and midwifery support workers regularly go above and beyond to ensure the women at Guy’s and St Thomas’ receive safe and evidence-based care.
